Who Is Emperor Palpatine? The Man Behind the Galactic Empire
Ian McDiarmid brought the iconic character of Emperor to life and played it so masterfully that this cunning and ruthless Sith Lord who manipulated the galactic events to rise to power became a fan favourite. Palpatine, who was ruthless and deceptive, carefully orchestrated the downfall of the Galactic Republic and the Jedi, replacing them with the oppressive rule of the Galactic Empire. Behind the mask of a wise politician, there was a secret Sith identity that remained hidden which was of Darth Sidious, Dark Lord of the Sith and the mastermind of galactic domination.
Palpatine’s red-bladed lightsaber was concealed for most of the Clone Wars, and using it was always his last resort. Trained in Form VII: Juyo, the most aggressive and unpredictable lightsaber combat style, Palpatine used sheer brutality and dark side energy to overwhelm his opponents. Unlike other Jedi duelists who relied on defense and discipline, Sidious wielded his saber with pure aggression, turning combat into a display of Sith dominance.
The Origins of Palpatine: From Naboo to the Sith

Palpatine was born on the lush planet of Naboo which was a peaceful and politically advanced world. Unlike the warrior cultures of Mandalore or the harsh deserts of Tatooine, Naboo prided themselves on diplomacy and governance. However, beneath all the elegance, there was immense corruption and ambition.
From quite a young age, Palpatine showed several signs of intelligence, charisma, but also a hunger for power. The Sith Lord had a noble upbringing and education in politics provided he used it as tools to manipulate others. However, his insatiable desire for control drove a secret pursuit of forbidden knowledge within him and the arrival of Darth Plagueis who was a powerful Sith Lord, changed everything for him.
Plagueis saw great potential in the young politician and took him under his wing as his apprentice. Under the guidance of the Sith Lord, Palpatine studied Sith philosophy, dark side rituals, and the art of deception. Plagueis was obsessed with immortality and believed the Force could be manipulated to prevent death. However, Palpatine had no interest in sharing any kind of power. For years Palpatine learned under Darth Plagueis and later murdered his master just like many Sith’s have before. Using Sith lightning, the apprentice murdered his master in his sleep and took full control of the Sith Order.
Now as the sole Sith Lord, Palpatine took the name Darth Sidious and set in motion his plan that would take decades to complete. The Jedi who were blinded by their own arrogance, remained unaware of the Sith’s return.
The Political Rise: Senator to Supreme Chancellor
While hiding his Sith identity, Palpatine climbed the ranks of the Galactic Senate and gained influence through carefully manipulating the people and events around him. There was a lot of chaos and corruption within the Republic that provided Palpatine many opportunities to gain power. His every move was calculated and every alliance of his was designed to serve him for his greater purpose.
The crisis on Naboo was the perfect opportunity for Sidious as he orchestrated it himself. The Trade Federation, under the influence of the Sith, blockaded the planet which caused widespread suffering. Palpatine appeared as a concerned senator and used this turmoil to gain sympathy. The Jedi Council sent Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi to resolve the conflict not knowing that they were playing right into Sidious’ plans.
Through political maneuvering, Palpatine was able to remove Supreme Chancellor Finis Valorum from office, and took his place. In public, this victory was a moment of hope for the people of the Republic but in reality the Sith Lord was in control of the galaxy’s most powerful government.
The Clone Wars: The Jedi’s Greatest Mistake
After gaining control of the Senate, Palpatine needed a galactic war to justify further expansion of his powers and the Separatist Crisis proved to be the perfect excuse. Count Dooku, also known as Darth Tyranus, led the Separatists forces under Palpatine’s orders. While the Republic and the Jedi saw Dooku as a rogue Sith Lord but in reality he was far worse as he was playing on both sides of the war controlled by Darth Sidious.
Many years ago Palpatine secretly commissioned the creation of a clone army and used the bounty hunter Jango Fett as its genetic template. As the crisis grew the Jedi were desperate for an army to combat the Separatists, and accepted the clones without realizing the hidden danger. Each clone was given a hidden protocol—Order 66, a command that would turn them against the Jedi when given a proper command.
Throughout the war, Palpatine slowly and secretly tightened his grip on the Republic. The Grand Army of the Republic was placed under his direct control and the emergency powers were also granted to him. The dark lord used these powers to make Jedi as traitors.

As the Clone Wars neared towards the end, Palpatine revealed his true nature. Anakin Skywalker, who was the prophesied Chosen One, had grown close to the Chancellor during this time. Palpatine manipulated Anakin’s fear of losing Padmé Amidala and convinced the Jedi Knight that only the knowledge of the Sith could save her.
Mace Windu and three other Jedi Masters confronted Palpatine and attempted to remove him from power. Sidious, who was now exposed, ignited his red lightsaber and unleashed the full power of Form VII: Juyo. All the Jedi Masters quickly fell leaving Windu behind to face the Sith Lord alone. Windu and Sidious had a brutal duel with Windu disarming Palpatine and preparing to strike his final blow. However, at the last moment Anakin intervened, severing Windu’s hand and allowing the Sith Lord to unleash a devastating blast of Sith lightning.
As the Jedi were all defeated, Palpatine declared the Jedi Order to be a threat to the Republic and executed Order 66 which turned the clone troopers against their Jedi commanders across the galaxy. Only a few were able to survive the massacre. The Republic was officially transformed into the Galactic Empire, with Palpatine as the Emperor and Anakin Skywalker who was reborn as Darth Vader, as his second in command.
The Rule of the Galactic Empire
As the Emperor of the Galactic Republic, Palpatine ruled through fear and military strength. The Death Star, a superweapon which was capable of destroying entire planets, was created to ensure total control over the galaxy. The Jedi were declared extinct by this point, and the few who were left were hunted by Darth Vader.
The Emperor expanded his Sith knowledge, by delving into dark side rituals, cloning experiments, and the pursuit of immortality. The Sith homeworld, Exegol, became his hidden stronghold where the Sith loyalists worked in secret.
The Fall of the Emperor
Despite having control for years, the resistance was growing more and more. The Rebel Alliance which was led by Leia Organa, Luke Skywalker, and Han Solo, emerged as a major threat for the Sith Lord. The Alliance were successful in destroying the first Death Star at Yavin 4 which was a devastating loss for the Empire.
Sensing the power of the new Jedi, Palpatine sought to turn Luke to the dark side of the Force. The final confrontation between them took place on the second Death Star, where Luke faced both Darth Vader and the Emperor. The Sith unleashed his Sith Lightning on Luke but he resisted, refusing to fall into darkness.
Vader, witnessing the suffering of his son, turned against his master. He lifted the Emperor and threw him into the reactor shaft, bringing an end to Sith rule.

Through the Sith alchemy and cloning technology, Palpatine was able to survive beyond death. On Exegol, a clone body of Palpatine infused with dark side energy became his new vessel. He built The Final Order, an extension of the Empire, in secret.
His final plan to possess Rey, his granddaughter, ended in failure. The last remnants of the Sith power were destroyed. This marks the true end of the Sith.
The Legacy of Emperor Palpatine
The impact of Palpatine’s rule shaped the galaxy for generations. The fall of the Jedi, the rise of the Empire, and the endless war between light and dark all traced back to the Sith Lord’s schemes.
