In this particular episode, Rau told Kanan Jairus: “Legend tells that it was created over 1,000 years ago by Tarre Vizsla, the first Mandalorian ever inducted into the Jedi Order. After his passing, the Jedi kept the saber in their temple. That was until members of House Vizsla snuck in and liberated it.”

In the Hands of Pre Vizsla

The dark saber was with the House Vizsla until the eventful days of the Clone Wars. Pre Vizsla, going against the pacifist canon of Duchess Satine of Mandalore, carried the dark lightsaber against both Obi-Wan Kenobi and Darth Maul. His aim was to bring back the Mandalore planet to its warrior roots again. But he was killed by Darth Maul who then became the legitimate owner of the dark lightsaber.

In the Hands of Darth Maul

The dark lightsaber became a ruthless weapon in the hands of Darth Maul. Wielding this dark saber, he killed Duchess Satine and fought Darth Sidious. He also defeated many Jedi Masters before the dark saber finally rested on Dathomir in the Age of the Empire. Darth Maul lost the dark saber to the brave warriors namely, Sabine Wren, Ezra Bridger, and Kanan Jarrus who took Darth Maul's weapon away from Dathomir. 

Later, Sabine Wren fought against the Emperor's Hand and recovered the dark saber back. She then gives it to Bo-Katan Kryze, who eventually lost it during the Empire’s Great Purge of the Mandalorians.

From Moff Gideon to Din Djarin

Bo-Katan fought the Empire and lost. He also lost hold of the dark saber and had to run out of Mandalore and go into hiding. Moff Gideon was the one who ultimately got the dark lightsaber after defeating Bo-Katan. He maintained the dark lightsaber from the Imperial era to the New Republic era. Moff Gideon subsequently lost the Darksaber in his duel to the Mandalorian bounty hunter, Din Djarin. That's how the dark saber returned to its Mandalorian roots.
