Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn, portrayed by Liam Neeson, wielded one of the most iconic lightsabers in all of the Star Wars universe. He was a Jedi who was known for following the Living Force. It is the right of passage for every Jedi to construct a lightsaber to achieve the rank of Knight. Qui-Gon Jinn went through the same process and constructed a simple yet elegant lightsaber, prioritizing function over decoration. The design of the weapon symbolized a straightforward approach to combat and life. While many Jedi constructed their lightsaber with elaborate details, Qui-Gon Jinn constructed his with a minimalist aesthetic, featuring a metallic silver and black hilt.

The green blade of Qui-Gon marked him as a Jedi Consular, a warrior who valued wisdom, diplomacy, and balance in the Force. While the Jedi Master was skilled in combat, he always saw violence as a last resort. His lightsaber served as both a defensive tool and an extension of his deep belief in the Living Force.

Mastery of Form IV – Ataru

Qui-Gon Jinn was extensively trained in the Ataru, form IV of lightsaber combat. This lightsaber form focused on speed, acrobatics, and aggressive strikes. Ataru was most effective in open spaces where mobility could be fully utilized. Strong and fluid attacks allowed Qui-Gon to overwhelm his opponents, using the Force to enhance his physical abilities.

Ataru required stamina and endurance. Extended duels could drain energy, leaving the practitioners very vulnerable. Qui-Gon Jinn relied on his years of experience and mastery of the Living Force to maintain strength in combat. The fighting style proved invaluable when facing formidable enemies like Darth Maul.

The Duel on Tatooine

While Qui-Gon Jinn and a young Obi-Wan Keboni were on a mission to save Queen Amidala, Jinn encountered Darth Maul for the first time on Tatooine. As both the Jedi were about to leave the planet, the Sith Lord ambushed Qui-Gon, attacking him with his double-bladed lightsaber. The green blade of Qui-Gon clashed against Maul’s red plasma weapon as they dueled each other.

Ataru allowed Qui-Gon to match the aggressive fighting style of Mual. The Jedi took swift strikes and defensive maneuvers to save himself from being overwhelmed. Despite both of them being very skilled and experienced, the duel ended without any victory. Qui-Gon managed to escape aboard the Naboo Royal Starship, leaving the battle unfinished.

The Duel of the Fates

The most legendary moment of Qui-Gon Jinn’s lightsaber was during the battle on Naboo. A final confrontation between the Sith Lord and the Jedi Master took place inside the Theed Palace. Obi-Wan Kenobi fought alongside Qui-Gon, but Maul’s double-bladed lightsaber provided him with an unfair advantage.

Ataru’s strengths and weaknesses were fully displayed during this duel scene. Powerful strikes pushed the Sith Lord back, but the confined space of the energy-core reactor limited Qui-Gon’s movement. Maul’s relentless assault separated Qui-Gon from Obi-Wan. After the master and apprentice were separated, the duel continued between Maul and Jinn, with each fighter using every skill learned through years of training.

Maul’s unpredictability and ferocity proved deadly for the Jedi Master. A sudden strike from the Sith Lord landed a fatal blow, which ended Qui-Gon’s life. The green lightsaber fell from the Jedi Master’s grasp, marking the end of a great warrior.

After the duel, Obi-Wan Kenobi used Qui-Gon Jinn’s green lightsaber to defeat Darth Maul, avenging the death of his fallen master. Following the battle, Obi-Wan built a new lightsaber, but it was influenced by Qui-Gon’s. More than a weapon, the green blade symbolized defiance, wisdom, and faith in the Force, shaping the fate of the galaxy.
